Select and Order
The control module is selected from confirmed-compatible options for the specific gas valve type and target platform. For River Oaks and Memorial homes running full automation ecosystems, the choice may depend on whether the homeowner's AV integrator needs RS-232 or IP control capability. For standalone app control without a hub, a WiFi-enabled fireplace module that connects directly to the home network is the simpler path.
Not all WiFi fireplace modules support both Google Home and Alexa simultaneously. Some require a hub device. Others connect natively to one platform and require a third-party bridge for the other. The platform question must be answered before the module is specified, not after it arrives.

Wire
The module is installed at the gas valve or in the junction space behind the control panel. Existing wiring is connected to the module's terminals based on the documented configuration from the assessment visit. The original wall switch or remote is either preserved as a backup control or bypassed, depending on the homeowner's preference.
Voice assistant integration, the configuration that allows Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or Apple Siri to operate the fireplace, is only as reliable as the wiring step beneath it. A module wired to incorrect terminals will appear to register on the platform and then fail to respond, or produce intermittent behavior. The wiring is confirmed functional before any platform registration begins.

Register and Test
The module is registered with the target smart home platform. A fireplace automation routine, a programmed sequence that activates the fireplace based on a scene, a schedule, or a voice command, is configured and tested before the technician leaves. The homeowner operates the fireplace from the app while the technician confirms the valve responds and the flame comes on within the platform's expected latency window.
If the homeowner uses Google Home, the fireplace appears as a connected device in the Home app. If they use Alexa, the skill is enabled and the device is named. Both are tested with a live voice command before the visit closes.
The existing gas valve and wiring determine which smart modules are compatible.
Most Houston gas fireplaces and inserts run on a millivolt system, a low-voltage electrical setup where the thermopile generates the current that holds the main gas valve open. There is no connection to the home's electrical panel. The entire system runs on the voltage produced by a small flame.
Here is what that means for smart integration: a standard line-voltage smart switch will not work with a millivolt gas valve. Connecting one damages the valve. The control module selected for your fireplace must be specifically rated for millivolt operation.
The technician maps the control wiring configuration, the specific arrangement of wires between the gas valve, remote receiver, and wall switch, before any module is selected. That map determines which terminals the new device connects to. It also reveals whether a bypass or adapter is required.
