We also check the throat damper from below at this stage. Some installations call for locking the plate open permanently. Others call for removing it entirely. The right approach depends on whether the plate is still intact enough to avoid interfering with the cable as it runs through the firebox.

Frame Seating and Cable Run

The stainless frame seats on the crown surface with mechanical fastening, not adhesive alone.

Once the unit is confirmed and on-site, the installation runs top-down. The stainless steel frame is positioned over the flue collar and secured to the crown surface. The silicone gasket is inspected before the unit leaves the ground. Any defect in the gasket surface means a different unit goes up.

The cable runs from the frame down through the flue liner to the firebox. We use the existing flue path, no penetrations through masonry are required. The pull handle is mounted at the firebox interior at a height that is operable from a standing position. Cable length is set so the handle has enough slack to operate without binding and enough tension to compress the gasket fully on the closed pull.

Seal Confirmation and Homeowner Demonstration

We test the seal before leaving the property, closed position confirmed, open position confirmed, operation confirmed smooth.

With the installation complete, we test from both ends. At the firebox, we pull the cable to the closed position and hold it. At the crown, or using a mirror and flashlight from below if roof access is already cleared, we confirm the gasket is compressed evenly on all four contact surfaces. Then we release. The gasket lifts cleanly and the opening is unobstructed.

We also test the open position for smooth cable travel. A cable that binds during operation will eventually fail at the crimp point. What the Technician Found on a Meyerland Install Last Summer

The original throat damper was a standard cast-iron pivot plate, probably installed when the house was built in the mid-1980s. It looked fine from below. Closed position, handle in the right slot.
