Spalling or Porous Brick Face

Brick is not impermeable. A standard clay brick absorbs water and releases it, but spalling brick, which has had its outer face separate due to moisture saturation, absorbs and holds water differently. The exposed porous interior of a spalled brick acts as a sponge during rain events.

In Houston, spalling brick is more common on older chimneys, pre-1980 construction, and on chimneys in coastal communities where salt-air exposure has degraded the brick face faster than normal.
