Frequently Asked Questions

01

Cleaning & Sweeping Basics

Chimney cleaning questions are the most common pre-booking calls we receive.

Q1: How often should I have my chimney cleaned in Houston?

Most Houston fireplaces need cleaning once a year, even if you only burn a few fires each winter. Short, infrequent fires still produce creosote (a tar-like combustion byproduct that coats the flue walls). Houston's high humidity lets moisture and organic debris accumulate inside the flue during the long off-season, typically April through October. Annual service keeps both from building into a more serious problem.

Q2: How long does a chimney cleaning take?

A standard chimney cleaning typically runs 45 minutes to two hours. The exact time depends on flue size, the amount of buildup present, and whether a written inspection report is included. A complete fireplace cleaning, covering the firebox, smoke shelf, smoke chamber, and flue, takes longer than a basic flue sweep alone. The written finding at the end of the visit adds time, but it tells you exactly what the technician saw.

Q3: Do I need to be home during a chimney cleaning?

Yes. Your technician needs interior access to the fireplace and exterior roof access. Someone must be present to allow entry and to receive the written finding before the crew leaves. Plan to be available for the full appointment window. If your schedule is tight, let us know when you book, we can give you a tighter arrival window based on crew availability that day.

02

Inspection Levels

The inspection level you need depends on why you're having the chimney evaluated.

Q4: What is the difference between a Level 1 and Level 2 chimney inspection?

A Level 1 inspection is a visual assessment of all chimney components accessible without moving or removing anything. It is the right choice for a chimney in normal use with no changes to the appliance or home. A Level 2 inspection adds a video camera scan of the flue interior and is required when a home changes ownership, after a chimney fire, or when the connected heating appliance is replaced or modified. For a full breakdown of each tier, see the Level 1 chimney inspection and Level 2 chimney inspection pages.

Q5: Does a chimney cleaning include an inspection?

At Novak Chimney Masters, every cleaning visit includes a visual check of the flue and accessible components. A full Level 1 or Level 2 inspection is a separate documented service with its own scope and written report. If you need documentation for insurance, a real estate transaction, or your own records, confirm a written report is included when you book, not all cleaning visits automatically generate one.

Q6: My general home inspector flagged the chimney, do I need a chimney specialist?

Yes. A general home inspector performs an observation, not a chimney inspection under NFPA 211, the industry standard that governs how chimney systems are evaluated. A chimney specialist assesses liner condition, draft adequacy, mortar joints, crown and cap integrity, and flashing, areas a general inspection does not evaluate in detail. If a chimney finding appears in your report, a specialist visit provides the documented assessment needed for negotiations or insurance purposes.

03

Gas Fireplaces

Yes, Novak Chimney Masters services gas fireplaces and gas venting systems.

Q7: Do you work on gas fireplaces as well as wood-burning chimneys?

Yes. Our scope includes gas fireplaces, gas log sets, gas inserts, and the flue and venting systems connected to them. Gas fireplace inspections cover components specific to those systems, burner condition, pilot assembly, thermocouple function, and venting adequacy. Those components differ from what's evaluated in a standard wood-burning chimney inspection. Learn more on the gas fireplace inspection and gas fireplace repair pages.

Q8: My gas fireplace pilot light keeps going out, is that a chimney problem?

Not always. A pilot that repeatedly extinguishes is most often a thermocouple or thermopile issue, not a chimney or venting problem. If the fireplace also produces an odor, shows visible soot, or the flame pattern looks uneven, a full gas fireplace inspection is the right starting point. That visit assesses both the appliance components and the venting together, so the correct cause is identified before any part is replaced.

04

Scheduling & Service Area

Novak Chimney Masters serves more than 50 communities across the Greater Houston Area.

Q9: What areas does Novak Chimney Masters serve?

Our service area covers the Greater Houston Area, including Houston, Pasadena, Pearland, Bellaire, Missouri City, Stafford, Humble, Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, League City, Baytown, Conroe, Cypress, Tomball, Galveston, Beaumont, and more than 50 additional communities. If you're unsure whether your address falls within our coverage, call (832) 701-0196 or email in**@*****************rs.com before booking.

Q10: How far in advance do I need to schedule?

Scheduling windows vary by season. During Houston's chimney season, typically October through January, appointment lead times run longer as demand increases. Scheduling in late summer or early spring gives you more flexibility and often a tighter appointment window. For urgent situations like a missing cap after a storm, active water entry, or an animal in the flue, contact us directly for priority scheduling.

05

After the Service Visit

Most fireplaces can be used immediately after a standard cleaning.

Q11: How soon after a chimney cleaning can I use my fireplace?

In most cases, right away. Standard cleaning does not require curing or drying time. If the visit included a crown sealant application or any mortar work, your technician will specify the waiting period before the fireplace is used, typically 24 to 48 hours, depending on the product and current weather conditions. Ask before the crew leaves if you're unsure.

Q12: Do I need a chimney cap, and should I ask about it when I book?

A chimney cap is strongly recommended for any open masonry flue in Houston. It keeps out rain, debris, and animals, all consistent concerns given Houston's climate and storm activity. If your chimney doesn't have a cap, or if the cap was damaged or blown off, request a cap inspection or installation when you book your cleaning or inspection visit. In most cases, the technician can assess and install on the same visit. See the chimney cap installation page for full details.

Q13: What do I do if my chimney liner is damaged, do I need to stop using the fireplace?

If your technician finds significant cracks, joint separations, or missing sections in your liner, the fireplace should not be used until the liner is repaired or replaced. A compromised liner cannot safely contain combustion gases or heat. If your written finding identifies liner damage, contact Novak Chimney Masters to schedule the appropriate chimney relining or chimney liner installation service before the next fire.
